アーラヴィー（Āḷavī）の比丘たちに与えられた名で、その過度な建築活動と伐採が樹木の精霊と地元の民衆をひどく怒らせたため、仏陀が彼らを制止してウラガ経（Uraga Sutta）を説かねばならなかった。

A name given to the monks of Āḷavī, whose over-zealous building activities and tree-felling once so provoked a tree-spirit and the local populace that the Buddha had to restrain them and teach the Uraga Sutta.

狩りの最中に人食い夜叉が住むバニヤン樹の陰に迷い込んだアーラヴィの王で、その霊に定期的に人間の生贄と食物の椀を供給すると約束することでのみ解放された。

The king of Āḷavi who, while hunting, strayed into the shadow of a banyan tree inhabited by a man-eating yakkha and secured his release only by promising to supply the spirit with a human victim and a bowl of food at regular intervals.

定期的な人間の生贄の要求は最終的に王自身の息子にまで及んだが、仏陀が留守中にその住処に入り、教えによってこれを説き伏せた人食いの霊。

The man-eating spirit whose demand for a periodic human sacrifice was ultimately extended even to the king’s own son, until the Buddha entered its dwelling in its absence and won it over through teaching.
