サーヴァッティーの富豪の子であったアラハン長老で、結婚を捨てて出家し、『テーラガーター』によれば過去世でヴィパッシー仏に供養を捧げたことがある。

KusinārāとSāvatthiの間にある町で、仏陀がかつて訪れ滞在した地であり、元理髪師の比丘の不適切な托鉢をめぐる論争の舞台であり、また仏陀が後にそこでの落雷について語った話の舞台でもある。
