ชาดกที่พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสตอบความหวาดกลัวของพระเจ้าปเสนทิที่ทรงได้ยินเสียงร้องของสัตว์นรก โดยตรัสเล่าถึงพระราชาแห่งพาราณสีในอดีตผู้ได้ยินเสียงประหลาดแปดอย่างในยามเที่ยงคืนจนหวาดกลัวยิ่งนัก จนกระทั่งพระโพธิสัตว์ทรงแสดงให้เห็นว่าเสียงเหล่านั้นล้วนมีสาเหตุตามธรรมชาติทั้งสิ้น
