लगभग पंद्रह शताब्दियों तक श्रीलंका की राजधानी रहा नगर, जिसे राजा पंडुकाभय ने पूर्ववर्ती बस्तियों के स्थान पर बसाया था और जिसे उत्तरवर्ती शासनकालों में झीलों, उद्यानों और विहारों से सँवारा गया, अंततः ग्यारहवीं शताब्दी में इसे त्याग दिया गया।
