마하비하라와 동맹을 맺고 칼링가의 불교도들과 밀접하게 연관된 스리랑카의 숲속 거주 비구 교단으로, 6세기에 처음 기록되었으며 후에 담바데니야의 파락카마바후 왕에게 특별히 존숭받았다.
