Akkhakkhāyika

Place

Une famine dans la région montagneuse de Koṭṭa à Sri Lanka sous le règne de Duṭṭhagāmaṇī, nommée d’après les noix akkha mangées faute d’autre nourriture

A famine in the mountain-region of Koṭṭa in Sri Lanka, during the reign of Duṭṭhagāmaṇī.

The king sold his earrings and procured a meal for five Arahants (Mhv.xxxii.29-30). The famine was so called because nuts called akkha (Terminalia Bellerica) were eaten, which at other times were used as dice. In the Commentary, quoted by the Mahāvaṃsa Ṭīkā (p.593), the famine is called Pāsānachātaka.
