Cūḷa-Assapura Sutta
SuttaTaught at Assapura, this sutta explains that it is not the robe, dwelling under a tree, chanting texts, or bathing three times daily that makes a true recluse, but the abandonment of all evil qualities.
Taught at Assapura to the assembled monks.
It is not the robe that makes the recluse, nor living under a tree, nor intoning texts, bathing three times a day, etc.
It is by putting away all the evil qualities that a man becomes a true monk. M.i.281-4.
