Giridipā
PlaceAn island near Sri Lanka that the Buddha, during his visit, is said to have drawn close to the mainland to relocate the yakkhas before restoring it to its original place.
An island near Sri Lanka. When the Buddha visited Sri Lanka he drew Giridipā up to Sri Lanka, told the yakkhas to go onto it, and then restored it to its former place (Mhv.i.30; Dpv.i.67 f). Geiger (Mhv.Trs., p.4, n.4) thinks that the reference is not to an island, but to the highlands (giri) in the interior of Sri Lanka.
