A wanderer (paribbājaka) who, with his friend Muṇḍiya, visited the Buddha at the Ghositārāma (D.i.159). The Buddha taught them the Jāliya Sutta (q.v.) According to the Pāthika Sutta, when Jāliya heard that Pāthika could not come to hold a discussion with the Buddha at Vesāli, he went to the Tindukakhāṇu-paribbājakārāma and tried to get Pāthikaputta to come. However, the latter was unable to come, being fixed in his seat. Jāliya thereupon spoke insultingly to him, calling him boaster, etc. (D.iii.22 ff).

Jāliya is described as dārupattakantevāsī, because, says the Commentary (DA.i.319), his teacher used to beg for alms with a wooden bowl.

Jāliya Sutta.– Taught to Jāliya and Muṇḍiya at the Ghositārāma on the question as to whether body and soul are one and the same (D.i.159 f). The Sutta is identical with the second part of the Mahāli Sutta and was once probably included in it.
