Kassapagotta3
PersonA monk of Saṅkavā who privately doubted the Buddha’s teaching as overly scrupulous, then sought him out at Rājagaha in remorse to confess and was praised for his self-restraint.
A monk living in Saṅkavā in the Kosala country. He heard the Buddha teach a discourse — the Saṅkavā Sutta (q.v.) — but was not satisfied with it and kept on thinking: “This recluse” (meaning the Buddha) “is much too scrupulous” (Adhisallikhatevāyaṃ samaṇo”ti). Later, he was filled with remorse and, having sought the Buddha at Rājagaha, begged forgiveness for his thoughtlessness.
The Buddha praised him for having seen his transgression, and for his confession thereof and determination to practise self-restraint. A.i.236 f.
