Jātaka

A birth story in which a cat tries in vain to seduce and devour a cock who is the Bodhisatta in disguise, told in reference to a monk tempted by a woman.

The story of a cat who tried to deceive a cock — with the idea of eating him — by offering to become his wife. Her efforts failed. The cock was the Bodhisatta.

The story was told to a monk who was tempted by the sight of a woman (J.iii.265 f).

This Jātaka is illustrated in the Bharhut Stūpa. Cunningham: Pl.xlvii.5.
