Kumbhaṇḍa2

Person

A class of pot-bellied spirits ruled by the deva king Virūḷha, also lending its name to a discourse in which Mahā-Moggallāna reports seeing a hungry ghost who had been a corrupt judge.

A class of spirits mentioned with Yakkhā, Asurā, and Nāgā. They live in the South and Virūḷha is their king (D.ii.257; D.iii.198). In the Vidhurapaṇḍita Jātaka (J.vi.272), Kumbhīra (q.v.) is mentioned as one of their chiefs. They had huge stomachs, and their genital organs were as big as pots, hence their name. DA.iii.964.

Kumbhaṇḍa Sutta.– Mahā-Moggallāna reports seeing a hungry ghost with testicles as big as pots, while descending from Vultures’ Peak. The Buddha confirms it, and says that the ghost was formerly a corrupt judge in Rājagaha. S.ii.258.
