The grounds of the building were laid out by Paṇḍukābhaya (Mhv.x.90; xvii.30).

Gajabāhu I first erected the Mahejjāsanasālā (Mhv.xxxv.122).

The Mahāvaṃsa Ṭīkā (p.378) explains that Mahejavatthu is a shrine (devaṭṭhāna) dedicated to the yakkha Maheja.
