Maṇicūḷaka Sutta
SuttaA discourse in which a royal headman, hearing it rumored at the palace in Rājagaha that Buddhist monks are permitted to accept gold and silver, denies it and later has this confirmed by the Buddha, who explains that monks may neither seek nor accept such gifts.
In the royal palace at Rājagaha, the report once arose among the retinue that Sakyan recluses were allowed to accept gold and silver. The headman Maṇicūḷaka, who was present, denied this, but, being unable to convince his audience, he sought the Buddha, who assured him that these monks were allowed neither to seek nor to accept gold and silver.
