Also called Mahānisabha, foremost among those undertaking ascetic practices in the time of the Buddha Padumuttara, whose example inspired Mahā-Kassapa to seek the same distinction.

Also called Mahānisabha, chief among those undertaking the ascetic practices (dhutaṅgadhara) in the time of Padumuttara Buddha. It was his example that prompted Mahā-Kassapa to strive for a similar honour. ThagA.ii.134 f; SA.ii.135 f; AA.i.85 f.
