수랏타(Suraṭṭha)의 왕이자 담마소카(Dhammāsoka)의 고문으로, 웃타라(Uttarā)의 아버지인 아귀 난다카(Nandaka)로부터 부처의 가르침을 따르라는 권유를 받았다.

King of Suraṭṭha, a contemporary of Dhammāsoka, whose adviser he was. One day, as Piṅgala was returning from Dhammāsoka’s court, the hungry ghost (peta) Nandaka, father of Uttarā, revealed himself and instructed him to follow the Buddha’s teaching. Pv.iv.3; PvA.244 ff.
