Sandhāna

Person

Домохозяин из Раджагахи и последователь Будды, чья беседа со странником Ниградхой привела к произнесению Удумбарика-сутты

A householder of Rājagaha. He was a follower of the Buddha, and it was his conversation with the wanderer Nigrodha that led to the teaching of the Udumbarika Sutta.

Buddhaghosa says (DA.iii.832) that he was the leader of five hundred lay disciples (upāsaka) and was a Non-returner. On one occasion, the Buddha sang his praises in the assembly for six qualities that he possessed. In the Aṅguttaranikāya he is mentioned in a list of eminent lay disciples (A.iii.451; cf. Dvy.540).
