Tevijja Sutta

Sutta

The thirteenth discourse of the Dīghanikāya, taught to Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja, refuting the idea that mere knowledge of the three Vedas leads to union with Brahmā and teaching the four Sublime Abidings as the true path.

The thirteenth sutta of the Dīghanikāya, taught to Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja who visited the Buddha at Manasākata.

The Buddha points out the futility of the belief that a mere knowledge of the Three Vedas leads to the attainment of reunion with Brahmā.

Such union can, however, be attained only by the practice of the four Sublime Abidings (Brahmavihāra) — loving-kindness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), sympathetic-joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā). D.i.235-53.
