PersonKnown as Kuṭumbiyaputta-Tissa, a thera who renounced vast wealth for forest life and, when hired ruffians came to kill him at his sister-in-law’s bidding, broke his own thigh bone to prove he would not flee, attaining Arahantship overnight through his endurance of the pain.
A Thera of Sāvatthi, better known as Kuṭumbiyaputta-Tissa. He renounced four hundred million of wealth and became a monk dwelling in the forest. His younger brother’s wife sent five hundred ruffians to kill him. He begged them to spare his life for one night and broke his thigh-bone with a stone as proof that he would not attempt to escape. During the night he overcame his pain and, dwelling on his virtues, became an Arahant.⁵¹
