An epithet for the sun, explained as meaning Aditi’s son, and also the clan name of the Sakyan royal family.

Another name for the Sun (suriya) (D.iii.196).

Buddhaghosa explains the name as meaning Aditi’s son (Aditiyā putto).

Ādicca was also the clan (gotta) name of the Sākyā who were called the Ādiccā (Sn.v.423).

Buddhaghosa (VibhA.466) gives it as a clan name of the Khattiyas, together with Koṇḍañña-gotta.
