排他的な霊的優越を主張する七人のバラモン苦行者に立ち向かった仙人で、呪われるほどにますます輝きを増し、ついに彼らは慢心を捨てた。ブッダゴーサはこの仙人を菩薩であるとしている。

A sage who confronted seven brahmin hermits claiming exclusive spiritual superiority, growing more radiant the more they cursed him, until they abandoned their pride; identified by Buddhaghosa as the Bodhisatta.

一般にカーラ・デーヴァラと呼ばれ、仙人サラバンガの七大弟子の一人であり、弟ナーラダの惑溺を思いとどまらせるのを助けた人物で、現世ではマハーカッチャーヤナとなった。

More commonly called Kāḷa Devala, one of the sage Sarabhaṅga’s seven chief disciples who helped persuade his brother Nārada to give up an infatuation, and who in the present age became Mahā Kaccāna.
