자신들만이 영적으로 우월하다고 주장하는 일곱 바라문 고행자들에게 맞선 선인으로, 저주를 받을수록 더욱 광채를 발하여 마침내 그들이 오만을 버리게 하였다. 붓다고사는 이 선인을 보살로 본다.

A sage who confronted seven brahmin hermits claiming exclusive spiritual superiority, growing more radiant the more they cursed him, until they abandoned their pride; identified by Buddhaghosa as the Bodhisatta.

흔히 칼라 데발라로 불리며, 선인 사라방가의 일곱 상수제자 중 한 명으로, 동생 나라다가 집착을 버리도록 설득하는 데 도움을 주었고, 현세에는 마하 깟짜야나가 되었다.

More commonly called Kāḷa Devala, one of the sage Sarabhaṅga’s seven chief disciples who helped persuade his brother Nārada to give up an infatuation, and who in the present age became Mahā Kaccāna.
