  • 사왓티의 젊고 학식 있는 바라문으로, 부처님의 견해를 논박하라는 동료 바라문들의 압박을 받아 계급 특권에 관해 부처님과 논쟁했으나 부처님의 논증에 설득되어 독실한 신봉자가 되었다. 두 사람의 대화를 기록한 경에도 그의 이름이 붙여졌다

  • A young and learned brahmin of Sāvatthi who, pressed by fellow brahmins to refute the Buddha’s views, debated him on caste privilege, was persuaded by the Buddha’s arguments, and became a devoted follower; his name is also given to the discourse recording their exchange.
