古い物語自体は他所への相互参照としてのみ存在する本生譚で、ここではアーラヴィーの比丘たちが建築資材を求めて人々を悩ませていたところ、その一員と誤解されたマハー・カッサパが事情を知り仏陀に報告し、仏陀は昔の苦行者は王が望むものを選ばせても決して安逸を求めることはなかったと述べて比丘たちを叱責したという枠組みで語られる。

A Jātaka whose ancient story is only cross-referenced elsewhere, framed here by an account of monks in Āḷavī pestering people for building materials until Mahā-Kassapa, mistaken for one of them, learns the cause and reports it to the Buddha, who rebukes the monks by recalling that ascetics of old never begged for comforts even when a king offered them their choice.
