自国に鳥がまったくいない国へ、陸地を見つける珍品として重宝されるカラスをまず持ち込んだ商人たちについての本生譚で、その後見事な孔雀を持ち込むと十倍の値がつきカラスは完全に影が薄くなり、ごみの山に放置されるという話であり、仏陀がこの世に現れると競合する師たちがかつての栄光をことごとく失ったことを示すために説かれた。

A Jātaka about merchants who bring first a crow, prized as a land-finding novelty in a country with no birds of its own, and later a magnificent peacock which fetches ten times the price and eclipses the crow entirely, leaving it neglected on a rubbish heap, told to illustrate how rival teachers lost all their former glory once the Buddha appeared in the world.
