තමන්ට කුරුල්ලන් නොමැති රටකට, ගොඩබිම සොයාගැනීමේ අලුත් වත්කමක් ලෙස අගය කරන ලද කපුටෙකු මුලින්ම ගෙන එන වෙළෙන්දන් ගැන ජාතකයකි; පසුව ගෙන එන අලංකාර මොනර කුරුල්ලෙකු දහ ගුණයක් මිලට විකිණේ, කපුටාව සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම අභිබවා යයි, ඔහුව කසළ ගොඩක නොසැලකිල්ලෙන් අත්හැර දමයි; බුදුන් වහන්සේ ලොවට පහළ වූ පසු ප්‍රතිවාදී ගුරුවරු කෙසේ ඔවුන්ගේ පෙර කීර්තිය සියල්ල අහිමි කරගත්තේද යන්න පෙන්වීමට දේශනා කරන ලදී.

A Jātaka about merchants who bring first a crow, prized as a land-finding novelty in a country with no birds of its own, and later a magnificent peacock which fetches ten times the price and eclipses the crow entirely, leaving it neglected on a rubbish heap, told to illustrate how rival teachers lost all their former glory once the Buddha appeared in the world.
