ชาดกเล่าถึงพ่อค้าที่นำอีกาไปยังดินแดนที่ไม่มีนกของตนเองก่อน โดยได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นสิ่งแปลกใหม่สำหรับหาแผ่นดิน ต่อมานำนกยูงงดงามไปขายได้ราคาสูงกว่าสิบเท่าจนบดบังอีกาจนหมดสิ้น ปล่อยให้อีกาถูกทอดทิ้งอยู่บนกองขยะ เล่าเพื่อแสดงว่าเหล่าศาสดาคู่แข่งสูญเสียเกียรติยศเดิมทั้งหมดไปเช่นไรเมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จอุบัติขึ้นในโลก

A Jātaka about merchants who bring first a crow, prized as a land-finding novelty in a country with no birds of its own, and later a magnificent peacock which fetches ten times the price and eclipses the crow entirely, leaving it neglected on a rubbish heap, told to illustrate how rival teachers lost all their former glory once the Buddha appeared in the world.
