ชื่อเรียกแม่น้ำคงคา กล่าวกันว่ามาจากฤๅษีภคีรถะผู้ทำให้แม่น้ำนี้ไหลลงเติมมหาสมุทร แม้ว่าอาจหมายถึงแม่น้ำอีกสายหนึ่งที่ไหลจากเทือกเขาหิมาลัยผ่านหังสวดีในฐานะหนึ่งในต้นน้ำสำคัญของแม่น้ำคงคา

A name for the river Ganges, said to derive from the sage Bhagīratha who filled the ocean with it, though it may also denote a distinct river flowing from the Himālayas past Haṃsavatī as one of the Ganges’ chief sources.
