  • The greatest commentator on the Tipiṭaka, a Brahmin scholar who joined the Order, travelled to Sri Lanka, wrote the Visuddhimagga, and rendered the ancient Sinhalese commentaries into Pāḷi.

  • Called Culla Buddhaghosa to distinguish him from the greater commentator of the same name, a Sri Lankan monk credited with two works and at whose request Buddhaghosa (1) wrote his Abhidhamma commentaries.
