三藏最偉大的註釋家，出身婆羅門，出家後前往斯里蘭卡，著有《清淨道論》，並將古代僧伽羅文註釋書譯為巴利文。

The greatest commentator on the Tipiṭaka, a Brahmin scholar who joined the Order, travelled to Sri Lanka, wrote the Visuddhimagga, and rendered the ancient Sinhalese commentaries into Pāḷi.

人稱小佛音，以別於同名的偉大註釋家，為斯里蘭卡僧人，著有兩部作品，正是應他之請，佛音（1）才撰寫了阿毗達磨註釋書。

Called Culla Buddhaghosa to distinguish him from the greater commentator of the same name, a Sri Lankan monk credited with two works and at whose request Buddhaghosa (1) wrote his Abhidhamma commentaries.
