현명한 충고를 무시하고 나무꾼들이 숲을 베지 못하게 막아주던 사자와 호랑이를 겁줘 쫓아버린 어리석은 나무 정령에 관한 자타카로, 짐승들이 떠나자 나무가 파괴되는 것을 보고 헛되이 그들을 다시 불러들이려 한다는 이야기이며, 사리불과 마하목건련을 모욕한 뒤 헛되이 그들의 호의를 되찾으려 한 코칼리카에 관해 설해졌다.

A Jātaka about a foolish tree-spirit who, against wiser advice, frightens away the lion and tiger whose presence had kept woodcutters from felling the forest, only to see the trees destroyed once the animals are gone, then tries in vain to lure them back, told about Kokālika’s futile attempt to win back Sāriputta and Mahā-Moggallāna after insulting them.
