비구가 갈애의 소멸을 통해 어떻게 해탈하는지를 부처님이 제석천에게 간략히 설명하시는 경으로, 이후 마하목건련이 제석천이 정말로 그 가르침을 이해했는지 의심하여 찾아가지만 처음에는 신통력을 과시하며 얼버무리는 대답만 받다가, 제석천의 궁전을 흔들어 동요시킨 뒤에야 한 마디도 틀림없이 올바른 답을 얻는다는 이야기이다.

A discourse in which the Buddha briefly explains to Sakka how a monk is liberated through the destruction of craving, after which Mahā-Moggallāna, doubting whether Sakka truly grasped the teaching, visits him, is met at first with an evasive display of divine power, and only receives the correct answer, word for word, after shaking Sakka’s palace to unsettle him.
