苦行者、菩薩の臨終の言葉「月光と日光」を、サーリプッタと同定される首座の弟子が正しく解釈するジャータカで、サンカッサの門でサーリプッタが謎を解いた技量を説明するために語られた。

A Jātaka about an ascetic, the Bodhisatta, whose dying words ‘moonlight and sunlight’ are correctly interpreted by his chief pupil, identified with Sāriputta, told to illustrate Sāriputta’s skill at solving a riddle at the gates of Saṅkassa.
