沙弥アチラヴァタが、規律ある比丘がいかにして内なる平静を見出すかというジャヤセーナ王子の問いに満足な答えを与えられず、仏陀が野生の象を調教する喩えなどを通じて、快楽に耽る者がなぜそのような事柄を理解できないかを説く経典である。

A discourse in which the novice Aciravata fails to satisfy the prince Jayasena’s question about how a disciplined monk finds inner peace, prompting the Buddha to explain, through the taming of a wild elephant among other similes, why one too fond of pleasure cannot grasp such matters.
