라마 서사시의 한 판본을 다시 들려주는 본생담으로, 다사라타 왕의 맏이들인 라마, 락카나, 시타는 음모를 꾸미는 계모로부터 보호받기 위해 숲으로 유배를 떠나고, 라마의 동생 바라타는 라마가 돌아와 왕위에 오를 때까지 그의 짚신을 상징적 섭정으로 삼아 나라를 다스린다.

A birth-story retelling a version of the Rāma epic, in which King Dasaratha’s eldest children Rāma, Lakkhaṇa and Sītā go into forest exile to protect them from a scheming stepmother, while Rāma’s brother Bharata rules in his stead using his sandals as a symbolic regent until Rāma returns to reign.
