  • A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
