एक जातक कथा जिसमें राजा नई भर्तियों के पक्ष में अनुभवी सैनिकों की उपेक्षा कर युद्ध में पराजित होता है, उसका पुरोहित बकरी-चरवाहे की कथा सुनाता है जिसने गुज़रते जंगली हिरणों की देखभाल में अपनी बकरियाँ भुखमरी से मरने दीं, यह राजा पसेनदी (Pasenadi) को वैसी ही पराजय पर सुनाई गई, राजा को आनंद (Ānanda) का पूर्वजन्म बताया गया।

A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
