新兵を優先して古参兵をないがしろにし、戦で敗北した王についてのジャータカで、彼の祭官は、通りすがりの野生の鹿の群れの世話をする間に自分のヤギの群れを飢えさせた山羊飼いの話を語る。同じ理由で同様の敗北を喫したパセーナディ（Pasenadi）王に説かれ、怠慢な王は阿難（Ānanda）の前世であったと特定された。

A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
