신병들을 우대하여 노련한 병사들을 소홀히 하고 전투에서 패배한 왕에 관한 자타카로, 그의 제관은 지나가는 야생 사슴 무리를 돌보느라 자기 염소 떼를 굶주리게 한 염소치기 이야기를 들려준다. 같은 이유로 비슷한 패배를 겪은 파세나디(Pasenadi) 왕에게 설해졌으며, 태만한 왕은 아난(Ānanda)의 전생으로 밝혀졌다.

A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
