စစ်သားသစ်များကို ရွေးရန် ကျွမ်းကျင်တပ်သားဟောင်းများကို လျစ်လျူရှုသော ဘုရင်တစ်ပါးအကြောင်း ဇာတ်ကြောင်းဖြစ်ပြီး၊ စစ်ရှုံးပြီးနောက် ပုရောဟိတ်က တောသမင်အုပ်စုကို ထိန်းစဉ် မိမိဆိတ်အုပ်ကို ငတ်စေခဲ့သော ဆိတ်ထိန်း၏ ဇာတိကို ပြောပြသည်။ ပသေနဒိမင်းကြီးက အလားတူအကြောင်းဖြင့် ရှုံးနိမ့်ပြီးနောက် ဟောကြားခံရပြီး၊ ပေါ့လျော့သော ဘုရင်ကို အာနန္ဒာ၏ ရှေးဘဝဟု ဖော်ထုတ်ခံရသည်။

A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
