නව බඳවා ගැනීම් වෙනුවෙන් තම පළපුරුදු සොල්දාදුවන් නොසලකා යුද්ධයේ පරාජයට පත් වූ රජෙකු පිළිබඳ ජාතක කථාවකි; ඔහුගේ පූජකයා, ගමන් යන වන මුවුන් රංචුවක් රැක බලා ගනිද්දී තමන්ගේම එළු රංචුව සාගින්නෙන් මිය යාමට ඉඩ හළ එළු පාලකයෙකුගේ කථාව කියයි; එම හේතුව නිසාම එවැනිම පරාජයක් ලැබූ පසේනදි රජුට මෙය කියන ලද අතර, නොසැලකිලිමත් රජු ආනන්ද තෙරුන් වහන්සේගේ පෙර ජාතියක් ලෙස හඳුනාගන්නා ලදී.

A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
