Một chuyện Bổn sinh kể việc một vua bỏ bê binh sĩ kỳ cựu để ưu ái tân binh và bại trận, vị tế sư của ông kể chuyện người chăn dê để đàn dê mình chết đói khi chăm sóc đàn hươu rừng đi ngang, kể cho vua Ba-tư-nặc (Pasenadi) sau khi ông bại trận tương tự, vua sao nhãng là tiền thân của A-nan (Ānanda).

A Jātaka about a king who neglects his veteran soldiers in favour of new recruits and is defeated in battle, whereupon his chaplain relates the tale of a goatherd who let his own flock starve while tending a passing herd of wild deer, told to King Pasenadi after he suffered a similar defeat for the same reason, with the negligent king identified as an earlier life of Ānanda.
