仏陀の死後、比丘ウデーナがバラモンのゴータムカに、自分自身を苦しめる者、他者を苦しめる者、両方を苦しめる者、どちらも苦しめない者という四種の苦行者について語る対話を記した経典で、渇愛を超えて生きる最後の者を、ゴータムカが真に正しい沙門であると認める。

A discourse recording a conversation after the Buddha’s death in which the monk Udena describes to the brahmin Ghoṭamukha four kinds of ascetics — those who torment themselves, others, both, or neither — with the last, who live beyond craving, recognized by Ghoṭamukha as the truly righteous recluses.
