සංඝමිත්තා තෙරණිය වෙනුවෙන් දේවානම්පියතිස්ස රජු විසින් තනන ලද භික්ෂුණී ආරාමයක්, රාජකීය ඇතා බැඳ තිබූ ස්ථානයට ආසන්නව පිහිටීම නිසා එම නම ලැබූ අතර, පසුව එහි භූමිය පුළුල් කරන ලද අනුරාධපුර නගර ප්‍රාකාරය හරහා විහිද ගියේය.

A nunnery built by King Devānampiyatissa for Saṅghamittā, named for its location near where the state elephant was tethered, whose grounds later straddled the expanded city wall of Anurādhapura.
