พระธรรมเทศนาที่ชีวกทูลถามพระพุทธเจ้าว่าสัตว์ถูกฆ่าเพื่อพระองค์โดยเฉพาะหรือไม่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงอธิบายว่าเนื้อสัตว์รับประทานได้เว้นแต่มีเหตุให้สงสัยว่าถูกฆ่าเพื่อจุดประสงค์นั้น หลังจากนั้นชีวกจึงประกาศตนเป็นสาวก

A discourse in which Jīvaka asks the Buddha whether animals are slain expressly for his use, and the Buddha explains that meat may be eaten unless there is reason to suspect the animal was killed for that purpose, after which Jīvaka declares himself a follower.

A discourse in which the Buddha explains to Jīvaka that a lay follower is one who has taken the Three Refuges and Five Precepts, and that such a person benefits both himself and others.
