菩薩であった獅子に仕えていた一匹の山犬が、自信過剰になり獅子の警告に反して象を攻撃すると言い張って踏み殺されたという話で、山犬はデーヴァダッタと同一視される本生話。

A Jātaka in which a jackal serves a lion as the Bodhisatta and, growing overconfident, insists on attacking an elephant against the lion’s warning and is trampled to death, the jackal being identified with Devadatta.
