깟사빠 부처님 시대에 처음에는 부처님을 그저 삭발한 은둔자라며 경멸했으나 도공 친구 가띠까라의 끈질긴 권유로 마음을 돌린 오만한 바라문으로서의 보살로, 이 초기의 모욕이 훗날 고따마 자신의 깨달음 이전에 여분의 고행 세월을 치르게 했다고 전해진다.

The Bodhisatta as a proud brahmin in Kassapa Buddha’s time who at first scorned the Buddha as a mere ‘shaveling recluse’ but was won over by his potter friend Ghaṭīkāra’s insistence, an early insult later said to have cost Gotama extra years of austerity before his own enlightenment.

훗날 마하 고윈다로 알려진 바라문 제관으로서의 보살은 일곱 동맹왕을 섬기다가 범천계를 구하고자 그 지위를 버렸고, 결국 모든 추종자와 함께 출가 생활에 들어갔다.
