사왓티의 부유한 가문 출신 비구로, 선정(jhāna)을 닦는 이들 가운데 으뜸으로 붓다에게 선언되었다. 수행 초기 승원 규율에 대해 지나치게 세심했던 탓에 ‘의심 많은 레바타’로 알려져 있다.
