부처님의 기적을 목격한 노파의 본생 이야기. 그러한 기적이 부처님의 마지막 생에만 국한되지 않음을 보이기 위해 상카사의 기적 이후에 이야기되었다. 그 노파는 웁팔라완나로 여겨진다.

A birth-story of an old woman who witnessed the Buddha’s wonders, told after the miracle at Saṅkassa to show that such marvels were not confined to his final life; the woman is identified with Uppalavaṇṇā.

바라나시의 부유한 바라문의 아들인 고행자 칸하의 본생 이야기. 히마와에서의 엄격한 고행을 위해 재산을 버렸고, 삭까로부터 은혜를 받았다. 칸하가 명상했던 장소에서 부처님이 미소 지은 이유를 설명하기 위해 아난다에게 이야기되었다.

A birth-story of the ascetic Kaṇha, a wealthy brahmin’s son of Bārāṇasī who renounced his fortune for rigorous asceticism in the Himavā and was granted boons by Sakka, told to Ānanda to explain the Buddha’s smile at the spot of Kaṇha’s meditations.
