現存する最古のパーリ語文法書『カッチャーヤナ文法』の伝統的な著者とされ、正統的な伝承では大迦旃延（マハーカッチャーナ）その人と同一視されるが、実際にはアヴァンティ学派に属する後代の南インドの学者であった可能性が高い。
